Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon Honored with MBE from Prince William

Duran Duran's legendary frontman, Simon Le Bon, was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his impactful career in music and commitment to charitable work. Le Bon accepted the honor on November 12 at Windsor Castle from Prince William, marking a momentous occasion for the singer whose career has defined a generation of music and style.

In a heartfelt response, Le Bon expressed his surprise and appreciation: “It’s incredible and totally unexpected.” Reflecting on the recognition, he shared, “It is fitting that the honour has been awarded not just for my role in music, but also for the work I’ve been fortunate to be involved with outside the band for some of the causes I believe in.” Le Bon’s commitment extends to ocean conservation with the Blue Marine Foundation, supporting disadvantaged youth through the Tall Ships Youth Trust, and lending his passion for sailing to benefit the Air Ambulance Service.

Le Bon also opened up about his musical journey, noting how he once faced intense stage fright: “I used to be a very nervous performer. I was terrified, and slowly I’ve been able to overcome that fear.” Today, he embraces the thrill of performing, saying, “I just walk out there, and it feels natural to me.”

As a pivotal figure in the 1980s New Romantic scene, Le Bon’s influence with Duran Duran remains strong. With iconic hits like “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” and “Girls on Film,” the band has accumulated numerous awards over the years, including a Brit Award for Lifetime Achievement, two Ivor Novello Awards, and two Grammy Awards. Duran Duran was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, solidifying their legacy.

Le Bon and Duran Duran have continued to innovate, with their 2023 Halloween-themed album, Danse Macabre, reaching No. 4 on the U.K. charts and breaking into the top 10 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart. They celebrated Halloween with a sold-out performance at Madison Square Garden and released an extended edition of Danse Macabre, along with the concert film Secret Oktober.

The band’s impact has been felt not just through their music but also in pop culture, capturing the admiration of fans like Princess Diana. Le Bon fondly recalled her playful spirit, sharing a memory of her wolf-whistling at him in a gym, remarking, “Nice legs! I’d recognize that bum anywhere!” Duran Duran honored her legacy in 2007, joining artists like Elton John, Tom Jones, and Rod Stewart for a Wembley Stadium memorial concert organized by Prince William and Prince Harry.

With Simon Le Bon at the helm, Duran Duran’s journey from the glam of the ’80s to their present-day relevance has inspired millions, and Le Bon’s MBE is a testament to his enduring influence in both music and philanthropy.
